Our yoga nidra offerings

I am delighted to be offering restorative yoga nidra sessions (Move into Rest) at The Zed Shed in Penryn, on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. These are (usually) biweekly sessions, alternating with the lovely Eli Chapman of Healing Light Reiki, who offers dreamy reiki drumming relaxations. Both of our practices are about riding your delta waves in deep rest mode, benefiting from the healing effect of stillness and deepest relaxation. Here, in a slightly jiggled up order, is the new yoga nidra page I’ve added to our Reflexation website. Read on to find out what yoga nidra is, and why I think it is so magical!

What is yoga nidra?

Yoga nidra is an amazingly relaxing and healing yoga practice that promotes deep rest and inner listening. Yoga nidra is a little like guided meditation, in which mind and body become profoundly relaxed and the brain drops into its most restful state – those precious delta waves that herald insight and healing in the liminal space between waking and sleeping. It’s an ancient yoga tradition that’s a little bit magic, in my scientific opinion. On a practical level, we prepare for yoga nidra with a little grounding and gentle movement and then receive our yoga nidra laying down or propped in a very comfortable position. In the space of yoga nidra you simply listen to my voice as you’re guided into stillness, and explore what you find there…

It’s not easy to find time or inclination to do nothing in our disconnected society, and the fruits of our addiction to ‘doing’ instead of connecting with who and what we really are, are only too sadly plain. In my own case, I’ve struggled with the toxins patterns of people pleasing and perfectionism, C-PTSD and fearful avoidance, hurting myself in various ways and often giving and receiving pain to and from from those closest to me. I’ve been healing and working on my own wholeness for many years no, and I’m full of gratitude for the path to more honesty and loving kindness. One of the brightest lights on my path is, without a solitary doubt, yoga nidra!

Ali Gunning of Resonant Being invited me to share a whole course of yoga nidra with her when I was going through a particularly traumatising chapter in my life, and daily practice of Ali’s nidra helped me move out of shattering anxiety into a state of observing, and feeling empowered to be myself even amid the high level challenges of my life situation at the time.

Yoga nidra magic 

Nidra is brain science mixed with a dash of pure magic when it comes to unravelling the webs of fear, anger, anxiety and ego that we can get tangled in. It helps us move mind, body and spirit to place of greater calm and a fearless ability to be honest and love, to love again or maybe even for the first time. Somehow nidra also often seems to release deep tensions and leave the body flowing with vital energy, all systems boosted and feeling a little more free.
